Distinquished Alumni Series: Dr. Edward J. Yaw
Colleges and Universities: An Uncertain Future in Today's Budgets
The higher education system in the United States has been dependent upon various forms of governmental subsidies for many years. At schools such as Columbia, much of it comes in the form of research grants. In other schools, much of the budget consists of direct support from governments at various levels, e.g. City, County, State and Federal. Dr. Steve Cohen of the Earth Institute told us last year that federal funds were again becoming available to support Environmental Research. But in New Jersey, cutbacks in education to meet governmental operating deficits have become more prevalent. What future do our kids and grandchildren face?
Edward J. Yaw received his Ed.D. from Columbia University’s Teachers College. He has been at the County College of Morris for thirty years, serving as President since 1986. Prior to that, he spent eleven years as an administrator at Adelphi University on Long Island. Dr. Yaw has served in his present position under eight New Jersey Governors and will discuss the funding of public universities, their impact on higher education in general, and specifically, effect that cuts in state funding have on the delivery of educational goals at all educational levels.
As part of our Distinguished Alumni program series, Dr. Yaw will be honored for his accomplishments in service to the educational system that helps our nation’s higher education system.
The program will be held on Tuesday evening May 18. Dr. Yaw has opened the facilities of his campus to us and the program will be held in the Davidson Rooms in the Student Center Building. From State Highway 10 heading westbound, turn left onto Center Grove Road. The campus entrance will be on your right. Follow signs to Parking Lot 7. Coming eastbound, turn right off Route 10 onto Dover-Chester Road, in which case the campus will be on your left. Once again, follow the signs to Parking Lot 7.
The doors will open at 7:00 p.m. and we will serve refreshments until the program begins at 7:30 p.m.
This event is offered at NO CHARGE to all who have paid their club dues for this year. We encourage you to bring family and friends at a charge of $5 each. Non-members and anyone registering at the door will pay $10. We encourage you to make reservations so that we know for how many we have to prepare.
You may register and pay on line below. If you are a member coming alone (no fee), then please send an email to pag73@columbia.edu to let us know you will be there. We look forward to seeing you on May 18th.
